Is it safe to come out yet?

Dear Friend,

You did it! You made it through the first month of 2021! If you're anything like us, the fall of 2020 passed like a kidney stone and left our nervous systems ragged. January packed plenty of fun, too. ::shudders:: Well, life in the 2020s is certainly not boring. If you could use some gentleness, a few chuckles, and a feeling of community, we invite you to join us a week from Saturday at our next show, The Future of Love. As always, we'll screen Octavia of Earth, our documusical inspired by the life of scifi luminary Octavia E. Butler, after the opening half hour. :)

As Roxie Hart says in Kander & Ebb's musical Chicago, I always loved vaudeville. Well. Except for all the racism. And misogyny. And homophobia. Uh. This is one of those "take what's best, leave the rest" things. The variety show format that the vaudeville era introduced has provided a structure for cabarets and revues for over a hundred years, and we had so much fun playing with that structure with Holidays in Space that we're doing it again! On Saturday, February 13, 2021, we'll host another hour of song, dance, comedy, and, above all, heart, as we explore what love might look like in the future. Register now to reserve your seat!

Virtual Variey Hour followed by Octavia of Earth film screening.

Readers' Advisory: on Anand's shelf

This month, one of the books I'm reading is Akwaeke Emezi's Pet, a genre-defying YA novel set in a near future still haunted by the ghosts of its past. It's an ALA Stonewall Honor Book, a National Book Award finalist, and won the Carl Brandon Society's 2019 Parallax Award. You can click the link above or the image of the book cover to find it at a library near you.

That's all for now - sending love to last 'til next we meet,

Adrian, Anand, Erica, & the rest of the Uncaged Librarian Time Travelers
